Gambia: Overdue update…way overdue

  1. I have so much to tell you

burn-the-vegan asked: You are a giant boss lady.

thanks? I’m still expecting a letter from you btw…and I need your address

Only hang around people that are positive and make you feel good. Anybody who doesn’t make you feel good kick them to the curb and the earlier you start in your life the better. The minute anybody makes you feel weird and non included or not supported, you know, either beat it or tell them to beat it.

Gambia: Awkward

  1. Apparently “ataya”, the tea everyone drinks in Gambia is a drug
  2. This Chinese green tea is considered to be drug because it “makes” people have hallucinations, smoke weed and do nothing all day
  3. I have consumed massive quantities of this tea
  4. hmmm…..
  5. I always drink the third round of tea because it’s not as strong or sugary..Maybe that’s why I haven’t experienced any “side effects”
  6. hmmm……………
  7. I’m not pale enough to be a “toubab”. Therefore, I am not interesting to most Gambians.
  8. My roots aren’t deep enough. Therefore, I am not embraced as an African or a Muslim sister.
  9. However I’m still receiving more preferential treatment than I ever would in the states
  10. hmmm……………………..
  11. Someone called me boss lady yesterday
  12. o_O…

Gambia: Wasps and Paw Paws

  1. Yesterday I facilitated a discussion about Black History Month at the US Embassy/American Corner
  2. I checked my email and received news that I will be a trainer for Northeast SPROG!
  3. (training for trainers starts in April or May and I don’t return home until June) hmmmm +__+
  4. “Market” the street dog discovered the route that I take to my internship and decided to follow me…..He also follows me on the way to the bush taxi stand on school days. Then he follows me from the taxi stand to the compound when I return from classes…(This is another blog post in the making)
  5. Slow internship day…everyone is completing their Friday prayers
  6. I stopped keeping track of the glasses of tea that I have consumed today (If people keep offering tea to me I WILL drink it!)
  7. My supervisor grabbed a wasp with her hands o_O
  8. I’m glad that the security guard cuts fresh Paw Paws for everyone in the office because I forgot to pack a lunch
  9. What are Paw Paws?
